Adam was still out by the time Kylie arrived home that evening. It was late, too, and her watch read after seven o’clock. Her mind had been elsewhere all afternoon, even while she was at the newsroom. Still, she managed to turn in a half-assed article for tomorrow’s publication and refused to find herself surprised when Malcolm came to talk to her right at five o’clock.

“What the hell is this? You tell me not to baby you; I assign you to a case that was your case in the first place; and now you hand in this garbage? I want it rewritten by six o’clock for tomorrow’s morning edition.”

“I can’t write it. Not after what happened,” she said, not looking up at him. Her expression remained stony as she stared blankly at the desk. “I don’t want to be on the Butcher case anymore.”

“You can, and you will write it, Kylie.” His tone had softened just a bit. “Rewrite it, and I also want your story, too. I want a first-person retelling of everything that happened. By six o’clock or you can consider yourself an insubordinate and get written up. I want them sent to my email.”

“Dick,” she mumbled, just low enough that Malcolm’s retreating figure couldn’t hear her.

She had done as he asked, taking two Klonopin to deal with the rising anxiety and her desire to vomit. The suspect in custody has yet to be identified publicly by police, but they are hard at work identifying the true person hiding behind the mask of The Manhattan Butcher…
